Mdina and Rabat

  • Mdina is a medieval walled town set on a hill
  • St Pauls Cathedral
  • Mdina gate
  • Narrow medieval streets

MDINA Silent City
Mdina, also known as the silent city, its name actually stems from the Arabic word ' medina' which means city. The surrounding village is known as Rabat, also stemming from Arabic and meaning 'suburb'. Mdina was the principal settlements of the Phoenicians about 3000 years ago and was the capital of Malta up until the arrival of the knights of St John in the 1500s. A major tourists attraction, Mdina is internationally recognized as an important UNESCO heritage site and the seat of the Maltese Bishop. The streets are narrow and the houses build high, with many doors having beutiful, omate brass knockers complemented by intricately build balconies. There is a calming feeling as you walk along the narrow streets and passageways of the tiny city, you get the opportunity to take in some of the best Norman and Baroque architecture on the island. Several palaces are situated here and most of them now are private homes.Take a slow walk through the winding streets and visit Vilhena Palace - home to the National Museum of History. Then a gruesome visits to the old dungeons, when scenes of torture and imprisonment are depicted by life size figures in period costume, and let yourself go back in time where life was not so rosy to say the least! Finally take a short walk to an amazing coffee shop, where you can enjoy homemade cheesecakes and cakes, perched on top of Mdina bastions - where panoramic views can be enjoyed by all.

St Johns Cathedral Valletta

St John Cathedral - Malta

st-johns-cathedral-malta
In St John's Square was build between 1573 and 1578 by Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar. When you step over its threshold, the interior amazed you with its dazzling beauty. The marble floor is covered with multicoloured marble tombstones where 400 knights are buried. Each is adomed with the coat of arms of its aristocratic occupant, along with symbols reminding onlookers of the inevitability of death. The walls are intricately carved with flowers and garlands, whilist the vaulted ceilings are splendidly painted with frescos by Mattia Preti. The Cathedral's treasures include a magnificent painting of St John the Baptist by Caravaggio as well as a series of beautiful tapestries with designs by Ruben and Poussin.

St Julians

St Julians

This former fishing village is now one of the main resorts on the island offering a huge range of restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs and is pretty vibrant at night, popular with the younger visitor but for those no longer wishing to dance the night away there is also a large casino on the peninsular and one is cocooned within your hotel if the nightclubs don’ appeal. During the day the pretty boats in the bay still remind one of its former fishing village life but also the modern shopping mall and large cinema, which shows all the latest release, have bought it right up to date. The shoreline is part of the St George’s Bay and views out to sea from the hotels are lovely.
